NOTE FROM
THE INTERIM PASTOR
Have you every considered
yourself a V.I.P. – a Very Important Person? While we may not believe we
are very important, Rick Warren in his book “Purpose Driven Life,”
would definitely disagree with you. Since the Bible says we are created in
the image of God, the old saying has meaning for us, “God did not make no
junk.”
Each Sunday as you come to worship, you are a V.I.P. whether you are
a worship leader or functionary, or one who just sits in the congregation,
lending your voice in song. What you may not know is, you never know how
important you might be to someone else along their spiritual journey.
Worship is one of the most important events for me as well as a very
exciting event. I might have an idea what is to take place, but I never
know how it is going to turn out.
Dr. Kenneth Moore, Regional Minister of Nebraska and a long
time personal friend, shared this piece from Robert Leslie Holmes about in
worship in his weekly epistle: "Worship reminds us of our human limitations
and of our Maker’s limitless greatness. Worship brings salvation and
assurance to believers and instructs us how to live and set our life’s
priorities. Worship exists as one of God’s primary ways of infusing us
with the abundant life that Jesus promises in John 10:10. Worship is
practical; it fills us with a desire to serve God and others and remains as
the one thing we carry from this life into the life to come." Robert Leslie
Holmes
Some people have already talked to me about home visits. I
encourage you to make an appointment at a time convenient for you and your
family. This is a get acquainted time, not an arm twisting session. It
was through this kind of visit at a previous church I learned of a young
person who wanted to be baptized and wanted to know when I would be
scheduling a Pastor’s Class. Pastor’s Class was scheduled almost
immediately, and we had an exciting baptismal service on the first Sunday
in Advent. I am encouraging you to set aside some time in your busy
schedule, and let us have a time to get acquainted. I need your help to
accomplish this very important task. My schedule is very flexible.
Appointments can be most anytime during the day or evening. It will be
easier for me to work into your schedule.
February is Heart month. The two things that come to mind are
Valentine’s Day and the American Heart Association. We also need to have
a BIG heart for our Food Pantry. With lay offs coming for many people in
our community, the Food pantry will be called on for more assistance than
usual. Support the Food Pantry with a little extra this month.
Blessings be with you all.

FIRE
ZONES AND BUILDING SECURITY
Our church building is
designed into “Fire Zones” much as most other large buildings are. By
“Fire Zone” I mean an area that can be closed off so that if a fire
occurs, under most circumstances the fire damage will be limited to those
smaller closed off areas.
Fires need oxygen for the combustion process to continue. If an
area is closed off by doors as an example, the fire will consume all the
oxygen in that space and if no additional oxygen is supplied the fire will
eventually self extinguish. By having doors blocked open the fire can
spread to the other open areas and will eventually consume everything.
Over time I have observed classroom doors, the kitchen door, and the
safe hall doors blocked open. If a fire had started while these doors were
open chances are that our church building would have received heavy damage.
The safe hall doors have a magnetic stop that if properly adjusted will
hold the doors open. The magnetic stop is tied to the building security
alarm and if a fire occurs the magnet will release and the door will
automatically swing shut. This safety device is defeated if a door stop is
used.
If you are the last person to exit an area, please make sure the
door is closed and latched. Be sure that no doors are held open as you
leave an area with a door stop. If you have opened the roll up door
located in the kitchen serving area, please make sure it has been rolled
ALL THE WAY DOWN! It does not provide the necessary fire protection unless
it is completely down and tight.
We also have several doors that will not latch unless you pull them
shut. Specifically the door into the storage area from the sanctuary and a
couple of the outside entry doors that are not often used fall in this
category. If you go through a door, please take an extra moment to make
sure the door is fully latched.
By doing these things we can make our church building more secure
and help ensure that we will have the use of these wonderful facilities for
many, many years.
Thank you for your help!
Mr. Safety

CHURCH
GROWTH
Valentine Dinner
Saturday, February 7th at 6:00 is the Valentine Dinner at church.
Church Growth is cooking the dinner. We hope you will enjoy the evening.
If you need a sitter, there will be one here at the church. If you
haven’t gotten your tickets yet, call Lenora at 524-4053 or Peggy at
522-5213 and we will make sure to include you in the reservations. We will
need to know this information by Thursday the 5th. You may pay us Saturday
evening. Thanks! We’re looking forward to a fun evening!!
Cookies for a Cause
The Cookies for a Cause for February is food for the pantry at the
Haysville Community Outreach which is housed at the West Haysville Baptist
Church. This outreach program is for all families who live in the
Haysville School District. They are open from 9to 12 on Monday thru
Friday. They are busy every day working with families that need help with
food.
This item of food that is needed the most is hot and cold cereal.
They are completely out of cereal, but if you prefer to give some other
foods, those will be most appreciated too. These items will be collected
all month and may be placed in the basket in the front hall. We know that
this is a very difficult tie for many people in our church too, but if your
family feels led to give one box or one can of something is all that is
needed.

WEEK OF
COMPASSION
“Where Is Your
Treasure” (Matthew 6:19-21)
Jesus cautions about what we place front and center in our lives:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust
consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves
treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves
do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart
will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21). Treasure of the heart is the wealth that
satisfies in the long run: what we care most deeply about, the people and
places we cherish, the experiences and qualities we value.
When we care for people nearby and far away, we can be transformed
by experiencing the presence of God. Your heart will be where your treasure
is. So, where is your treasure? May you find it, and your heart, by sharing
resources and changing lives with a generous gift to Week of Compassion.
Your friend and servant, Amy Gopp, Executive Director, Week of Compassion
First Christian will receive the Week of Compassion offering Sunday,
February 17 and Sunday, February 22, 2009
