HAYSVILLE FCC NEWSLETTER

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Church…

This week I want to share some things church leaders are saying concerning reaching out to others in our community. These are innovative and proven leaders of the church in today’s world. The world has radically changed in the last 20 years. The church typically takes 20 years to respond to our emerging culture, in some cases even longer. The things you read this week are the realities we face and must respond. I am so excited that First Christian Church in Haysville sees what I see, a field ripe for harvest, but we must be careful how we gather the people God has called us to serve. Above all we need to understand we are servants, bound to serve our Lord and Master Jesus! I hope you enjoy and are encouraged by these comments:

IN WHAT WAYS ARE YOU ENCOURAGING THOSE WITHIN YOUR FAITH COMMUNITY TO REACH THE UNCHURCHED?

Matt Hammett: “I think serving is very significant. We earn the right to be heard and gain influence on people’s lives when we authentically and sincerely care for them, and when we put their needs before our own. When we serve others in a culture that is so self-centered, that service will stand out. It’s about intentional acts of kindness toward the people in our lives.”

Doug Pagitt: We are trying to model community and provide opportunities for it in situations that are appropriate. If you provide opportunities for conversations, meals in people’s homes, or events in which people’s opinions and expressions becomes center point, then learning begins to be formed.

IF YOU COULD GIVE PASTORS ADVICE ON HOW TO REACH THE NEXT GENERATION, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

Chris Seay: First, look at people in scripture, like Daniel, to learn what it means to be mission-oriented. Second, make some important changes in how you communicate and teach. Transition your teaching and begin to tell the story of God. Christ’s stories were always subversive; they challenged conventional wisdom of the day, rather than wrap it all up tightly and neatly in 30 minutes. Thirdly, Re-examine how we subdivide the church. The way most churches operate, there is no opportunity for natural interaction. Instead, single people need to learn from married people; young marrieds without kids should learn from married people with kids; and married people with kids should learn from married people with grown kids.

Matt Hammett: Make sure to have an emphasis on worship. Music has always been a big part of the Church, but it’s even bigger now because it is the universal language people speak. Next, put a huge emphasis on a team concept. Church is not a one man show all about the pastor. There needs to be a renewed sense of the priesthood of all believers, and the church should allow people to discover who they are in Christ and serve Him in their own unique calling.

Doug Pagitt is the pastor of Solomon’s Porch in Minneapolis, Minn.

Chris Seay: Is Lead Pastor at Ecclesia in Houston, TX

Matt Hammett is Lead Pastor at Flood Church in San Diego, California

PRAISE THE LORD . . . DID YOU KNOW?

Kenton and Kendall Strait, students at HJUCO, just returned from state forensic competition in Kansas City where they placed 1st in the duo competition. Kendall placed 3rd and Kenton placed 5th in individual competition. They will be going to national competition in March. Kenton and Kendall are the grandsons of Lorraine Strait.

Dale and Donna Atkeson’s grandson Matthew Proctor is going to be deployed for a second time. The first deployment was to Iraq, now he will be going to Afghanistan. Some folks have expressed an interest in adopting Alpha Company for the next six months by regularly praying for them as well as sending care packages. Dale and Donna will share all information next Sunday.

THANK YOU

Thank you for selecting our ministry for your church’s January mission gift of $130.12. Your gift supports ministering to families who have suffered the loss of a baby family member. Your help through this gift is growing AgapèCare Cradle’s capacity to respond to more families requesting our unique funeral program.

Thank you for blessing AgagèCare Cradle’s ministry to magnify the love of Christ to grieving parents. Thank you for your prayers, presence and gifts. Sustained by grace, Shannon S. Barnes, Executive Director

I want to thank everyone who came to help me celebrate my 80th birthday and Gloria for planning it! I enjoyed seeing everyone and like it said in one of my cards that George and Anita brought . . . I feel like that old Chinese scholar whose name and mine are: Young No Mo! Thanks again and love you all!! Pat Barnes

Thank you to everyone who offered prayers for Mike’s safe return to China. We enjoyed his short visit. Merrill and Dee

Bruce, Angel, Max and Adeline Causey have been worshiping with us the past several months however; on Sunday, March 7 they will be moving back to Alabama where they will be closer to family. We will miss them but we know how important being near family is to them. Blessings!

CAMP CORRECTIONS

Friends,
Please note this change in our 2010 camp schedule. The web site will be updated soon. Renee

Dear Friends,
I am sorry to do this - but I goofed!!! The date for Chi Rho 1 will change to June 21-26 (not 13-19) and
the date for Grand Camp 1 will change to June 24-26 (not 17-19).

The error was mine - it involves our commitment to the MDA Camp and its program. Please forgive me (I hate making changes!)
Please help us to spread the word!

Many thanks for your patience! Blessings, Steve Martin

FRIDAY NIGHT FIRE

Are you Thirsty?

Friday Night Fire is a new women’s ministry at First Assembly of God Church in Haysville. We will be having this all women’s service one Friday night a month from 7-9 p.m. in the sanctuary of the church.

The next Friday Night Fire will be March 5, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. There will be fellowship, worship and a word of God from a woman of God. We will be learning about our thirst quencher. So if you have been feeling a little dry and would like a fresh filling from God, then please join us in this time of worship.

We would love for you and the women of your church to come out and be filled with the promise of what God has for us!

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely, Kristi David, First Assembly of God Church, 1100 East Grand, Haysville, KS 524-5800 Ext. 125 or 737-3554
