NOTE FROM PASTOR
MILT
Father’s Day is one of my favorite days. Being
a Father myself, it is a day when I am on the receiving end of cards from
my family, and not necessarily having to send any out. There are a couple
of things I have learned over time about Fatherhood. Number one, I like
being a Father and am proud of it. Number two, and probably more
important, my children continue to remind me that I am a Father, and do not
let me forget I am the patriarch of the family.
Father’s Day is also important to me as it will be the 48th
Anniversary celebration of my ordination. I was ordained on Father’s
Day, June 18, 1961 in Crenshaw Christian Church in Inglewood, California.
What has made this event more important over time; it was one of three
major events in my life at that time that my Father was able to attend. My
Father was not a minister, but a life long member of the Christian Church.
He served the church as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for a number of
years. Looking back, my Father not only was a great influence on my
Christian life, he was a positive influence in my ministry.
While I celebrate this milestone, the mail this past week brought me
two different kinds of announcements from two of the churches I have
served. For me, they are bittersweet announcements. One was from the
church in Joliet, Montana; a church I served for 2 ½ years. They will be
celebrating their Centennial in July. Time and distance prevent me from
attending. A friend of mine has consented to attend and bring greetings
for me.
On the other side was a letter and announcement that South Side
Christian Church in Omaha, Nebraska, a church I served a little more 3 ½
years prior to my retirement, will close its doors October 18th of this
year. This church has served the South Omaha Community for more than 100
years. It is sad for me to see this once vibrant congregation end this
way.
I encourage everyone to be in worship as we celebrate Father’s
Day. I will bring what I trust will be a message especially to celebrate
and lift up Fathers – young and mature. Blessings be with you all.
Milton Bryarly, Interim Minister

CHURCH
GROWTH
Pops for Pops
Join us as we celebrate our fathers with a cookout at the church on
Father’s Day. Bring a side dish and /or dessert, lawn chairs and
a good appetite. We provide everything else. This is a great opportunity
to visit with others in the congregation and their families. We will eat
at the back of the church around the new gazebo and in the shade of the
building. If it rains we will eat inside. Don’t forget! Be here
Sunday, June 21 at 5:00 p.m. for “Pops for Pop.”
Cookies for a Cause
Our Cookies for a Cause is Union Rescue Mission for men. It’s an
organization that has been in operation for 59 years helping men in
desperate times turn their lives around. They believe in the saying
“Feed me a fish and I’ll eat for a day. Teach me to fish and I’ll
eat for a lifetime.” They believe that to help our community, we can’t
put a “band-aid” on the problem. The mission is striving to take the
homeless off the streets. They teach men ways to overcome their present
lifestyle in order to keep today’s homeless from being tomorrow’s
homeless. Next week we’ll tell you about some of the programs that the
Mission has in place to accomplish this goal. If you want another list of
needed items for the Rescue Mission, there will be some on the cookie
table. If you are contributing by check, please make it out to Union
Rescue Mission. Thank you in advance for your generous offerings.

GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS
OFFERING ~ Sunday, June 28, 2009
Each year, near the anniversary of our loss from
the tornado of May 3, 1998, we receive an offering to be given to a
congregation that has had to endure the pain, grief, and challenge of
rebuilding following a catastrophe. We refer to this special offering as
the “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” offering. The church to receive this
offering hasn’t been chosen at this time. This offering will be received
on Sunday, June 28 and Sunday, July 5, 2009.

NOT BY BREAD
ALONE
Based on the returned surveys, the following
people completed their Bible reading commitment, and certificates were made
available to them Sunday, June 14.
Completed the Whole Bible:
Dale Atkeson, Janice Church, Marsha Devan, Johnna Hall, Lenora
Heath, George Lespagnard, Shirley Lieurance, Alma Murrow,
Carolyn Roberts, Joeann Strawder, Walter Strawder, Nancy Sturm,
Scott Sturm, Angelie Vincent
Completed the New Testament:
Joyce Andrade, Plinio Andrade, Dee Deck, Merrill Deck, Beaulah
Eastman, Bill Eastman, Ron Lewis, Skip Noordhoek and Betty Phillippe,
Completed Own Reading:
Willa Aldrich
From the comments received on the post-reading survey, it was
apparent that participants, whether they completed their plan or not, were
blessed by the reading of the Word.
If you weren’t at church to receive your certificate, it will be
available on the table at the back of the sanctuary for a couple of more
weeks. Also, if you completed your reading plan but your name is not on
this list, please just give the office a call and a certificate will be
prepared for you as well. Johnna Hall

FAMILY SUMMER REVIVAL
SERIES
Wow. We were so amazed and excited by the
tremendous turn out to last month’s Luau in Riggs Park. It was wonderful
to see
so many of you there! (77 of you, in fact) Thank you for coming and
supporting our efforts so completely.
Our second event in our series is scheduled for Sunday, June 28th at
7:00 p.m. We will be hosting an Ice Cream Social. We are calling the
event Sundae Sunday. There is a sign up sheet on the table in the back of
the sanctuary. If you could bring a batch of your favorite homemade ice
cream, please indicate that on the sheet. Our committee will provide the
toppings and the spoons! Hope to see you ALL there!

2009 LEGACY OF JOHN BENEFIT
DINNER
A good laugh helps with blood flow, supports the
immune system, lowers blood sugar, improves relaxation and sleep, and
lowers pain: laughter is the best medicine! Kansas Christian Home invites
Disciples and friends to a night of laughter at the 2009 Legacy of John
dinner, 6:00 p.m. July 18 at the Airport Hilton in Wichita. Christian
comedian Mike Williams will bring the entertainment for the annual
fund-raising event. Inspirational entertainer Mike Williams has been
featured on network television, magazines, and in live performance. He will
offer a dose of laughter in stressful times. The Legacy of John fund
underwrites costs for residents of the Care Center and Independent Living
community who have little or no personal resources, many of whom have
outlived their funds. Today’s economic climate makes the Legacy of John
even more important. Currently KCH has the highest percentage of Medicaid
recipients in Newton. The L of J fund also helps provide a healthy and safe
environment for all residents by providing upgrades and equipment that are
beyond the normal budget, such as music and physical therapy equipment and
the new wireless call system with tracking of responses. To attend the
dinner, sponsor a table, or to volunteer, contact the Kansas Christian Home
at 316- 283-6600 Ex. 113 or say “yes” when a table host contacts
you.

GRAND CAMP
(Grandparents)
Good news! Good news!
Good news!
Grand Camp has proven to be so popular this year that we have run
out of beds and spaces! So Grand Camp 2 is being added to the schedule for
June 22- 24 (less than two weeks away). We realize this is not much notice.
Or, maybe, given the Disciples tendency to register at the last minute, it
is too much notice!
What we do know is that we already have approximately 13 planning to
attend! If you know of other grandparents who would love to bring their
grandchild/children for a terrific experience, please let them know of this
new opportunity.
Campers should arrive Monday afternoon (1:00 pm). There will be an
evening supper - 3 meals on Tuesday - and the camp will close following
breakfast on Wednesday.
Registration Forms are on the website; however, we would appreciate
receiving a phone call in the Topeka office letting us know of their
intentions to attend. Thanks for spreading the good news! Paxton Jones

EXCITING NEWS
I just
wanted to share with all of you that have prayed for me during my past two
years of graduate school that I have accepted a faculty position at
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and will begin teaching this
fall. I am the new Public Relations Instructor, and needless to say, I am
very excited about this opportunity. I look forward to serving in this new
capacity. It is indeed a blessing and an answer to prayer.
Thank you again for all your prayers. Stacey Howard
