FROM THE INTERIM PASTOR
Sometime ago I heard this statement: NOTHING
HAPPENS, YOU MAKE IT HAPPEN! The Bible is full of great stories. Some of
these stories or themes of these stories have been the subject for movies
or television shows. While we like to hear these stories over and over
again, there is a point or lesson in them.
The story of the Rich Young Ruler in Luke 18:18 is one of those
stories we like to hear. We like the story because it is does not seem
like one that relates directly to us. After all, most of us would consider
that we are in the middle somewhere, and not necessarily people who are
rich. This man asks Jesus, “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
There is an air to this story that suggests this man thought he could give
something, like money or land or buildings to Jesus. What we miss is,
Jesus did not need his money or his possessions. Jesus was after his most
prized possession, himself. Romans 12:1 tells us “to present your bodies
as living sacrifices.”
This is an exciting congregation, with a number of interesting
programs. Among them are our Sunday School and Youth programs. Our church
believes these are a very important part of our church program. I have
found three words that we need to weave into our vocabulary: ENGERY –
COMMITMENT and SACRIFICE. These words are important for both the leaders
as well as those we strive to lead.
In a society where we put heavy emphasis on individualism, it is
important to know how important we are to one another. We need one
another, and together we make a difference in our community of faith.
Blessings be with you all. Milton Bryarly, Interim Minister

CHURCH GROWTH
Ladies! This coming Friday the 28th is the
UFO/Craft Night. Please join us for the first couple of hours to help us
put together jars of layered bean soup, tea and cocoa mixes. We do this
every year to help the Kansas Christian Home in Newton with their annual
bazaar. Come around 7:00-7:15 and we will start then. It is always so
much fun working together for such a good cause. Peggy Smith will share a
very east pattern with any lady who embroideries to make items for the
bazaar. Please let her know if you are interested in helping.

TEACHER APPRECIATION SUNDAY
This Sunday, August 30th, we will have the
opportunity during our worship service to pay homage to our volunteer
teachers and leaders. Please take some time this week and write a brief
note to thank them for their dedication and commitment to sharing their
love of Christ to others through this incredibly worthy ministry.
There are baskets on a table in the back of the sanctuary where you
can put these notes to be collected and then distributed to the recipients.
Please take advantage of this opportunity to say “thanks”!

YOUTH MINISTRY FORUM
Well . . . we’ve got our work cut out for us,
but thanks to the 25 individuals who attended Sunday’s youth ministry
forum, we now have several goals and strategies for building and
maintaining a successful Sunday School program for our church, and a great
beginning for our Wednesday night K-5 program. Many, many thanks to those
who attended the meeting and hung in there to the end! Whew!

BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY
By now you are aware that September 20th has been
designated as BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY for First Christian Church in
Haysville. The beginning place is for every member and friend of the
church to put this important date on your calendar.
You are asked to consider bringing a friend for this special Sunday.
The question might be, “Who is a friend?”
A friend might be closer to you than you think. It may be a spouse
or someone in your home that is away from the fellowship and spiritual
nurturing of the church. It may be someone you work with, or are very
close to in some other way. It may be a person who claims to be a
Christian, but has dropped out of church for various reasons. This might
be the perfect opportunity to lead them back to the road of faith.
I heard the story of a lady in a church that was having a Bring A
Friend Sunday. She was talking with her hairdresser on this subject.
After a brief discussion, the hairdresser answered the lady by saying, “I
would love to go to worship with you.” You never know who you might
lead.
You will hear more about Bring A Friend Sunday in worship and in the
weekly newsletter. Stay tuned.
