NOTE FROM THE INTERIM PASTOR
I
had been invited to attend and participate in a historical event. I
have had such invitations to a few events that took on historical
proportions. This one was different. I was not sure I wanted to attend,
let alone participate. I was advised by the regional minister in
Nebraska I should make an effort to be there. Thanks to First Christian
Church in Haysville, I was able to attend and I am glad I did.
Attending and participating in the final service of a congregation
is something contrary to my thinking let alone my calling as a
minister. Some people in the church knew of my reluctance to attending
this service. Even on Sunday morning as I was preparing to attend the
Sunday Service, I was trying to convince myself I did not want to
attend. Like so many times over the 3 ½ years I served south Side
Christian Church in Omaha, my car seem to know the way to the church.
There I was parking my car in the parking lot of the church just north
of the church, a place I had parked in my tenure as minister.
Once inside, things seemed very different, very worshipful. I was
warmly greeted by friends and members of the church, “How glad they
were I would make the effort to be with them on this very historical
day.”
I understood the historical significance better in the afternoon
service. The church had 109 years of history, of which there was one
person I know who has been a part of that history for at least 70
years. It was the closing of one period of history, and the beginning
of another. A Hispanic Ministry which has been nested in that church
for a couple of years will continue to be a beacon and lighthouse in
this facility that has been at that location since 1920, dedicated to
bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to that community. In the remarks
made by the Hispanic Pastor, he said, “The 109 years of history is now
entrusted to us. We will remember and carry on for the future.”
It reminds me of a story I heard recently, “We need to look in the
rearview mirror only for that which guides and directs us forward.”
That is good advice, even for us in Haysville at this time and place in
our history.
Blessings be with you all. Milton Bryarly, Interim Minister

Dear First Christian Church Family,
Dartha and I want to say how much we anticipate coming and joining

NEW LOVE NEW MERCY
Sunday,
October 25, 2009 is Consecration Sunday! Our guest speaker will be Dale
Richmond. He is active in the congregation at Hillside Christian Church
and professionally is a career coach.
During the morning worship we will be asking our members to make
their financial commitment to our 2010 church budget by completing an
Estimate of Giving Card. Every member who completes an Estimate of
Giving Card does so voluntarily. We urge people to attend even if they
feel strongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in
such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she
chooses not to fill out a card.
Following worship we will have our traditional BBQ Victory Dinner prepared and served by Fred’s.
See you there!
Your Consecration Sunday Team
Johnna Hall, Chair, Dale Atkeson, Crystal Swibold, Ron Swibold and Margo Walker

E-MAIL FROM PLINIO AND JOYCE ANDRADE
We
have had an eventful week. Plinio was working in the garage Tuesday and
was on a two-step step stool. He went to step down and did not have his
foot on the last step, very much, and fell backwards. He put his left
arm behind him to brace his fall and broke his wrist, jammed his
shoulder and had a knot on is head. We went to our family doctor and
they sent us to an emergency room. The emergency room x-rayed his wrist
and shoulder and did a CT scan on his head. The CT scan did not show
anything and the shoulder is not broken but the wrist is broken. The
emergency room sent us to an orthopedic doctor on Wednesday. They took
some more x-rays and he had surgery today. (Wednesday) He had two pins
put in his wrest and they put a bar on the outside of the cast to hold
everything in place. The doctor said after he got set it would not stay
in place even with the pins so he has this bar. I don’t know how long
he has to wear the bar but he goes back to the surgeon next Wednesday.
His fingers and thumb are so swollen and bruised tonight. We put ice on
for 30 minutes every hour and he has to keep it elevated. At night he
is supposed to take pillows and blankets so he can keep it propped up
with his fingers pointed straight up. What fun it is going to be! He
says his fingers are not bruised and if they aren’t, I am color blind.
