Haysville First Christian Church Newsletter November 3, 2009

NOTE FROM THE INTERIM PASTOR

There are holidays and then there are holidays. Usually when we speak of the holidays it is that time from Thanksgiving to New Years! From a commercial point of view the holiday season begins with Halloween. Then there are those holidays throughout the year that give us a three-day week-end. The meaning for the holiday might be lost, but it does give us a three-day week-end, which might be more important to us.

Veteran’s Day was one of those holidays that was put into a three-day week-end setting, but ended up going back to its original day, November 11th to celebrate Veterans’ Day. Originally Veterans’ Day was Armistice Day, celebrating the end of hostilities of World War I. The Armistice was sign on the 11th day of the 11th month and the 11th hour. A shoe salesman in Emporia, Kansas, was instrumental in making this day to honor all Veterans, and in May, 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower signed the proclamation to honor all Veterans on Veterans’ Day.

The City of Haysville has a program at the City Hall at 11:00 a.m. to honor Veterans on Veterans’ Day. This Sunday, November 8th, we will take a moment to honor our veterans and service personnel during the worship service.

Blessings be with you all. Milton Bryarly, Interim Pastor

THANKSGIVING DINNER

Every year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving we celebrate this holiday together as a church family. The Church Growth Committee puts this dinner together but not without your help. We need pies, salads, relish trays, five people to bake turkeys and people to help clean up and help in the kitchen after the dinner. If you can help in one of these areas, please sign up on the table in the entryway. Food will need to be brought to church on Sunday morning the 22nd of November. Thanks in advance for all your help. Church Growth

PRIZES AWARDED FOR TRUNK OR TREAT DECORATIONS

The Trunk or Treat evening and contest was a great success! Best family costume went to the Chadd family for their portrayal of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Best in technology was awarded to the Marsh family. Morgan Shetler won for her anti- Halloween theme of Easter. The Grayson family won for the scariest theme with the bed of their truck decorated as a graveyard. They also won the overall prize. A good time was had by all!

HOLIDAY MUSIC AHEAD!

Attention all former and future choir members:  Music has been chosen and ordered for Thanksgiving and Christmas services.  Practice will start Sunday, Nov. 8, at 4:00 for one hour rehearsals.  Please put this time on your calendars for an important addition to our church services at this holiday season.  I have tried to choose easy but interesting music that will make our singing and listening a worshipful experience. We will meet on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. for one hour.  We need you!

CHURCH GROWTH

ovember’s cause is Christmas gifts for the residents of Kansas Christian Home. KCH includes on its campus a 92 bed licensed skilled nursing facility certified by Medicare and Medicaid The needs of the elderly vary from skilled nursing and geriatric rehabilitation to semi-independence. Each level and program of care is developed to help the elderly—regardless of the length of stay—attain physical function, social and emotional health and spiritual growth.

Residents look forward to the arrival of Santa on Christmas morning. Nancy Kasper, the Lifestyle Director, sneaks in and puts a massive amount of gifts under the trees sent by us to donors. For many of the residents this the only Christmas gift they will receive. The twinkling eyes and smiles of the resident’s faces on Christmas morning prove you’re never too old for Santa to come. It would be wonderful if we could collect a lot of items for them for Christmas. You have been given a list of suggested gifts in the bulletin and there are more lists on the table in the entry. Thanks for thinking of the residents of KCH.

In November, congregations throughout the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will be collecting a Thanksgiving Offering. The offering directly benefits our 14 colleges/universities and 7 seminaries, divinity houses, and theological foundations. Minkook Um, a theological student supported by Disciples Seminary Foundation, recently remarked, “I am empowered to study for ministry. Your gifts to the Thanksgiving Offering make it possible for students like me to attend seminary.”

On November 8 and November 15, Disciples will be asked to contribute to this special offering. Your generosity for Disciples Mission Fund will support leader development through Disciples higher education institutions.
