NOTE FROM THE INTERIM PASTOR
Thinking
about our Thanksgiving offering, and how it supports our Disciple
Colleges and Seminaries, took me down memory lane. In one church I served, the Disciple Women were studying and planning for some kind of celebration for
Disciples Higher Education Day. I sent a letter to the various
colleges asking them to be a part of this important event in our church.
Besides printed material about the college I asked if it was possible
they could send me a mug and a sweatshirt from their respective
institution for our special service. I received mugs from several of
our colleges and hung them on a mug tree in my office, offering coffee
when visitors came by. Naturally, I asked for college sweatshirts
especially in my size. On the Higher Education Sunday, several of our
young people modeled the sweatshirts during the service.
Our Thanksgiving Offering helps support the various Disciple
Colleges and Seminaries. Our emphasis is more than just raising money,
but raising awareness of our various Disciple Colleges and the
education opportunities these institutions offer. Disciple Colleges
have much to offer in the way of education and financial aid. TCU –
Texas Christian University is one of our Disciple Colleges. Its football team, the Horn Frogs, is currently number 4 in the major polls.
This Sunday, November 15th we will dedicate the bell and bell tower
that has been installed at the South entrance of our parking lot. The
weather forecast for Sunday is rain. That may keep us from having the
dedication outside, but we can share the dedication inside if
necessary. Blessings be with you all. Milton Bryarly, Interim Minister

CHURCH GROWTH
Family Fun Night
This coming Saturday the 14th will be Family Fun Night. Bring some
soup, sandwiches or your favorite dish to share with others. Following
dinner we play board games, cards or dominos. If the children don’t
care to join us for games, they may watch a DVD. Join us at 6:00 p.m.
for a fun evening of good food and fellowship.
Cookies for a Cause
November’s cause is Christmas gifts for the residents of Kansas Christian
Home. Many of these residents have run out of money and all they have
is their Social Security check which goes for their room and board at
the home. It would be wonderful if we could collect a lot of items for
them for Christmas. You have been given a list of suggested gifts in
the bulletin and there are more lists on the table in the entry. Please
keep these residents in your thoughts and prayers. Any checks you give
should be made out to the Kansas Christian Home. Please put “Residents’ Gifts” on the memo line. Thanks for all you do for these dear elderly ones.
Angel Tree
Every year at Christmas time, First Christian Church
joins other churches in the community in purchasing gifts for children
in the Haysville community whose families won’t be able to give their
children any gifts this Christmas. Please pick a card or two from the
Angel Tree in the entry. The card lists the age and gender of a child.
Return the gift UNWRAPPED in a bag with the card attached to church by December 6th. We will be taking the gifts to West Haysville Baptist Church (Haysville Community Outreach Center) on that Sunday (12/6/09) right after our worship service.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Christian
Education is and always has been a life long adventure. As a part of
discipleship it does have a beginning but does not have an end on this
earth. All Christians need to move toward a better understanding of
what God has planned for us in the present and in the future. We on the
Christian Ed. task force looking at the current efforts toward Christian
Education, and looking toward the future have some possible ideas of
new ministries that lay ministers could use their skills to make work
for our local Church. So as the ideas are put on paper think to yourself, do I have a gift to give for this type of ministry?
1. Jazz Band for the Church service.
2. An adopt a grandparent program for the Church so that the youth and the older adults can learn from each other.
3. A small youth singing group.
4. An intergenerational Sunday School class that might have adults and youth of all ages involved in it.
5. Content orientated short term Christian
thematic studies in the evening. (i.e., How to get out of debt,
Computer security, or how to work a computer, what does God have for my
life, End of the earth studies, Revelation, etc)
6. I will keep adding ideas as they are presented, and we will look forward to new ministries that pop up.
Since these are lay ministry events, it will take lay ministers to
step up with excitement and see where some of these ministries might
lead to in the life of the Church. These are just a few of the ideas that might work to enhance the educational ministry of the Church. If you have anymore please voice them and let us see together how they can be worked into the ministerial fabric of the Church for ongoing Christian Education!!! As the old saying goes, “if it is going to be, it is up to me.”
